Your expected TCF Canada scores

Adjust any skill that feels different for you. For most people, it is speaking.
Educational estimate. Based on IRCC equivalency and Express Entry CRS rules current in 2026. Core second-language points assume English is your first official language and French your second, which is the usual case for TCF Canada candidates, and are capped at 24 (22 if you have an accompanying spouse or partner). The official CRS calculator on Canada.ca is the authoritative source.
This starting point comes from your self-assessment, not a test. The 25-minute diagnostic gives you a real, examiner-scored number on all four skills.
How your score becomes points
The TCF Canada gives you four scores: listening, reading, speaking, writing. Each one is converted to an NCLC level, the French scale that Express Entry uses. NCLC 7 counts as CLB 7 in every immigration calculation.
The part people get wrong: Express Entry takes your lowest of the four, never an average. One weak skill sets your whole result. That is why the calculator marks your weakest skill, it is the one to train first.
Once all four sit at NCLC 7 or higher, French adds two things to your profile:
- Core points for French as a second official language: 1 point per skill at NCLC 5 to 6, 3 points per skill at NCLC 7 to 8, 6 points per skill at NCLC 9 and above, up to 24.
- A proficiency bonus: 25 points if all four French skills are NCLC 7 or higher, rising to 50 points when you also have CLB 5 or higher in English.
And there is a third effect that is not points at all. NCLC 7 in all four skills makes you eligible for French-language category draws. In 2026 those draws have invited candidates at CRS scores well below the general draws, so for many people French is the difference between an invitation and years of waiting.
