TCF Canada or TEF Canada: which one to sit
Both are accepted for Express Entry and for citizenship. Both convert to the same NCLC scale. The choice is about format and habits, not about one being a shortcut.
What they have in common
- Both are approved by IRCC for Canadian economic immigration and citizenship.
- Both test the same four skills: listening, reading, speaking, writing.
- Both results are valid for two years and convert to NCLC levels, so the scoring logic is identical: Express Entry takes your lowest of the four.
- Both reward the same thing in speaking and writing: structure, a clear position, developed examples, and B2 markers like the subjonctif and the futur simple.
Where they differ
| TCF Canada | TEF Canada | |
|---|---|---|
| Reading and listening | Multiple choice, difficulty rises through the section, scored 0 to 699 | Multiple choice, fixed set of items, scored on points |
| Speaking | 3 tasks, about 12 minutes, scored 0 to 20 | 2 sections, about 15 minutes, scored on points |
| Writing | 3 tasks, 60 minutes, scored 0 to 20 | 2 sections, 60 minutes |
| Feel | Adaptive pressure, the questions get harder as you go | Steadier difficulty, more items to get through |
The formats are close enough that your final NCLC level should land in the same place. What moves is comfort. If a rising difficulty curve rattles you, the TEF Canada's steadier pace may suit you. If you lose focus over a long run of similar questions, the TCF Canada's shorter sections may help.
How to actually decide
- Availability. Check test dates and centres near you for both. The one you can sit six weeks from now often beats the one you would sit in four months.
- Do one timed sample of each. Not a full mock, just one reading section and one writing task per exam. You will feel within twenty minutes which format fits your habits.
- Then commit. Preparing for both at once splits your attention. Pick one and learn its exact task shapes, its timing, and the wording it uses in prompts.
