French level test, calibrated on the TCF Canada

Ten minutes to find out where you actually stand, from A1 to C2. The result appears at the end, with the answer to every question. No email address is asked for before you see it.

The test opens in the platform. Nothing to install, nothing to create.

What this test measures, and what it does not

It measures your reading comprehension, on texts close to those of the TCF Canada: a notice, an email, an article, an argued piece. The questions climb steadily from A1 to C2, and your level is set on the ones you actually got right.

It measures neither your speaking nor your writing. Those two are judged by ear and by reading, and no multiple-choice questionnaire can do that. A site that announces a speaking level after ten automatic questions is telling you a story.

It delivers no official score. Only the TCF Canada taken in an approved centre produces a result recognised by IRCC. This test tells you where you stand today, which is something else, and often more useful before booking a date.

Why the result is not held against your email

Many sites show your score only after collecting your address. Here, the level and the corrections appear straight away, at the end of the last question.

The reason is simple, and self-interested: a result held hostage does not get shared, and sharing is exactly what we are after. Your address is asked for afterwards, to receive a detailed study plan, and that is up to you.

What you do with it next

A level on its own is worth little. What matters is the skill that is capping you, because your Express Entry score is calculated skill by skill: one weak skill drags everything else down with it.

If your reading comes out low, you know where to start. If it comes out high while you keep stalling on the exam, the problem is elsewhere, and it is almost always speaking. Either way, you have stopped guessing.

Ten minutes, now, rather than one more assumption.
